Important attractions are spread over the five caves, containing statues and paintings, but the first 3 caves are older and larger than the other two. These beautiful statues and paintings are related to Gautama Buddha and his life. The caves host 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings and four statues of gods and goddesses, which are unique in scale and degree of preservation. The depictions include magnificent Buddha images and rock paintings of vivid colours and shapes. Dambulla Cave Temple was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991.
